3. The role of nano-silicon dioxide in abiotic stress on crops


Under adverse conditions such as water shortage, high and low temperature, and high salt, the normal state of plant morphology, physiology, and biochemistry is threatened, and productivity decreases. Silicon can participate in regulating the physiological processes of plants to resist these adversities. Compared with ordinary large-particle silicon, nano-silicon dioxide has the characteristics of small size, large surface area, and high reactivity, and can be used as an effective regulator for plant growth and improving crop quality. Nano-silicon dioxide with a larger surface area can affect the transport of water by plants, improve water utilization and water content, and maintain cell expansion. Under high-salt conditions, the osmotic potential of plants increases, Na+ ions accumulate, and growth is inhibited. However, nano-silicon dioxide can reduce its ion accumulation by hindering Na+ absorption, thereby restoring plant growth and development.
