Silazane small molecule compounds are raw materials for preparing polysilazanes. The main preparation methods include the reaction of chlorosilane with amine and the reaction of silazane with butyl lithium. The former is the most commonly used method, in which amine can be used as an absorbent for the HCl released in the reaction. The steric hindrance of amine and silicon substituent has a significant effect on the difficulty of the reaction and the distribution of the product; while the latter reaction of silazane with butyl lithium is a very effective way to prepare new straight-chain silazanes or cyclosilazanes.


Polysilazanes can also be directly prepared by aminolysis of dialkyldihalosilanes, which is very similar to the preparation of polysiloxanes by hydrolysis of dialkyldihalosilanes.
