Safety Upgrade! Novel Silicone Coating Acts as "Fireproof Armor" for Lithium Batteries

Recent electric vehicle (EV) battery fire incidents have intensified focus on thermal runaway prevention. A breakthrough polysilazane (PSZ)-based silicone coating is emerging as a robust "firewall" for lithium batteries.

This micron-thin coating, applied to battery separators or electrodes, leverages polysilazane’s unique ceramicization: when exposed to extreme heat or flames, it instantly transforms into a hard, dense, insulating ceramic barrier. This physically blocks heat/oxygen transfer, preventing thermal propagation between cells. Simultaneously, silicone rubber—with superior elasticity and sealing properties—is widely adopted in battery pack gaskets, cushioning pads, and wire harness protectors, forming a "second defense line" against electrolyte leaks and physical impacts.

Industry experts confirm this aerospace-derived solution is transitioning from premium EVs to mass-market models amid rising energy-density demands. Leading battery makers like CATL and BYD have integrated the technology into next-generation packs.
