Thermal barrier coating (TBC) is mainly used on aircraft engines, turbines and steam turbine blades to protect the high-temperature alloy substrate from high-temperature oxidation and corrosion, and to play a role in heat insulation, increasing the engine inlet temperature and improving the engine thrust-to-weight ratio. With the improvement of engine and turbine performance, especially the higher and higher operating temperature of military aircraft engine blades, the original materials can no longer adapt, and the development of new coating materials has become an urgent need for the military industry.


In 2014, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the key direction of the industrial base strengthening project. Among the 7 coating materials listed in the direction of high-performance coating materials for surface strengthening of industrial parts for improving the basic capabilities of high-end equipment, 2 involve thermal barrier coating materials, one is a multi-component MCrAlY material as a bonding layer of thermal barrier coating, and the other is a multi-phase ceramic material as a surface layer of thermal barrier coating.
