Silicon Resin Powder Boosts Fire Safety

Hits: 396 img

Recent electric vehicle charging fires and burning appliance casings have raised public concern over plastic flammability. A new flame retardant, IOTA 6107 silicone resin, offers a cleaner solution.

Unlike traditional halogenated or highly polluting retardants, this solid powder requires only 0.5–1.0% addition to significantly improve the fire rating of engineering plastics like PC and PC/ABS. Testing shows it preserves transparency — transmittance reaches 88.6% with haze as low as 1.22% in polycarbonate sheets, far less impact than many alternatives. It also contains no trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TFMS) or its salts, making it safer for daily products.

The material promotes rapid char formation on surfaces, suppresses smoke, and blocks heat and oxygen. Common items such as power strips, charging pile shells, automotive interiors, and home appliance housings can benefit — gaining higher flame retardancy without sacrificing clarity or mechanical strength.

In a typical PC/ABS formulation for electronics, adding just 0.5–1.0% of IOTA 6107 works synergistically with phosphorus-based retardants to achieve a dense, protective char layer. With rising demand for fire-safe materials in homes and EVs, this silicon-based additive delivers both peace of mind and performance.
